For use as a sideboard or buffet, the cabinet’s originally closed front has been modified to open by four small, front-facing doors, revealing two interior compartments. The cabinet front consists of six inset panels, each painted with a pair of peony blossoms, one red and one blue. The lush flowers are surrounded by leafy branches and unopened buds, stretching to fill every available space like an untamed garden. Universal symbols of love and beauty, flowers are prominent motifs in Tibetan art and are often imaginative hybrids of various blooms, most commonly of peonies and chrysanthemums. The raised frame enclosing each panel is decorated with matching floral scrollwork and round shou character (壽) medallions for longevity.
