About the artist:
Carol Theroux (1930-2021, Los Angeles, CA)
One of America’s most admired painters of the Native American Indian, Carol Theroux is widely known for the sensitivity and authenticity of her work. Drawing inspiration from her own Cherokee heritage, she portrayed the traditional values of Native American life, paying tribute to their noble past in her portraits, collectible plates, and Native American porcelain dolls.
Her work can also be found in Leanin’ Tree’s special collection of Native American greeting cards.
Carol’s figurative portrayals of late 1800’s women in their long bustled dresses, grand hats, transport the viewer to another place in time. Occasionally you will find a rare depiction of horses or an exquisitely detailed still life, but you will know they are Carol’s by the deft handling of this difficult medium.
Carol Theroux has been a featured artist in numerous national publications, including Southwest Art Magazine in 1983, Art of the West 1990-1997, and International Pastel Magazine in 2001. Carol was a charter member of the Pastel Society of America and was included in the 1993 Who’s Who in American Art. She was also a charter member of The Pastel Society of the West Coast
Carol passed away from natural causes in February 2021 in her home surrounded by family.
