A most impressive work, hand-crafted in Mauritania, Northwest Africa, at the turn of the late 19th / early 20th century, high-quality materials, construction, and craftsmanship, exceptionally executed in highly decorative traditional Tuareg peoples styling, featuring a rectangular solid rosewood chest with strap-hinged lid, adorned with elaborate applied arabesque reticulated iron, copper and gilt brass overlay, surmounted by black enamel turned finial handle. The top with ornate pierced lockplate that opens to reveal a red fabric-lined interior.
*Please note, at the time of writing this we also have a similarly styled large chest / monumental box available*
Mauritania African tribal folk art; the country’s name derives from the ancient Berber kingdom of Mauretania, located in North Africa within the ancient Maghreb. Berbers occupied what is now Mauritania beginning in the third century AD. Arabs under the Umayyad Caliphate conquered the area in the late seventh century, bringing Islam, Arab culture, the Arabic language and Moorish – Islamic art. Starting in the late 19th century, France laid claim to the territories of present-day Mauritania, in the early 20th century Mauritania was fully colonized by France as part of French West Africa. All these influences lend to a most distinctive artistic style.
