15th century tribal wood panel with Mahakala, Tibet
A dramatic wood panel from the front of an early Tibetan chest, with all the original mineral pigments and iron hardware. Mahakala is a guardian deity of Tibetan Buddhism and is often represented with a black face, which symbolizes his all-encompassing nature, as black includes all the colors of the spectrum. It comes with a custom metal base and measures 12? (30.5 cm) high by 34? (86.4 cm) wide.
