Matched Pair of E. F. Caldwell circa 1920’s Neo-classical Gilt Bronze Sconces

The sconces are made of bronze with a copper and gilt finish with fine detailing in the Neo-classical style. Each sconce has two arms with new porcelain candelabra sockets and wire. They retain the original porcelain candle covers. They are complete with mounting hardware. They are not stamped Caldwell but they are identified as such in the Caldwell archives at the Smithsonian Library. They are found in the Large Binder, No. 129, page 16, numbered A23629.

At the time of listing, we have one other matching pair available for a total of two pairs being sold separatly.

Each measures 11″ wide, 5 3/4″ deep and 18/” tall.

Each measures 14″ wide, 5″ deep and 16″ tall.

A pair of French mirror-back and iron sconces with crystal accents. This pair of triangle mirrored sconces feature delicate crystal details of acanthus leaf motifs. There is an element of geometric and dainty which balance each other beautifully. The iron has an oxblood patina to show this fabulous pair of sconces’ age.

A pair of Italian Rococo inspired wall sconces rewired for the U.S.. These gilt wood hand carved sconces have curvaceous design with an ornate softness. The patina and chipping in the old paint give this pair of sconces a sense of age as well as charm. These would be perfect on either side of a fire place or your front door (inside, of course!).

Housing 3 lights each, sitting in a basket of green Murano small grape drops. Will be rewired with certified UL US sockets for the USA and certified sockets for other countries and ready to hang. A nice pair of French 1930 art deco wall lights in nickel plated solid brass or bronze holding beautiful panels in frosted molded-pressed glass. The shades were acid frosted and then polished by hand to create glossy highlights. This model slip shade is never signed like many other models of the large glass factory of Etablissements Jean Gauthier. The mounts were made by a large French company in bronze art deco lighting that sometimes used the foundry marks BEV. So far we have not found out the name of this firm and never a product catalog was found.

The sconces are 12 inches high. 9,29″ wide and 5,5″ deep. Both are in excellent condition.
I have three pairs available. Some shades have shallow chips on the rim. All hidden by the metal mounts. I have re-nickeled and patinated the mountings. The wall lamps come rewired. I placed American candelabra base sockets.

Jean Gauthier had his first workshop at 12-14 rue Jean Robert in Paris and later expended with factories in the town of Ezanville. In the early days just after the first world war Gauthier made cameo shades that were sometimes signed Gauthier. The plants in Ezanville were opened for the production of art deco glassware in molded-pressed glass. Many art deco models are unsigned. Some are signed EJG for Etablissements Jean Gauthier. Others are signed J. Robert pseudonym for J. Gauthier based on the street name of the first workshop. In the 30s Gauthier started a line of shades done in opalescent semi-crystal, mainly cups. Some models are unsigned. Others are signed EZAN France, signature for Gauthier based on the city of the second plant.

Pair of vintage Italian wall sconces on wooden bases with brass figural swans with wings outstretched and glass shades from about the 1950s. The swans are made of thin brass and have hollow bodes. The shade of each lamp is completely crafted of Murano Glass hand-blown grape clusters. Each grape is unique so they all vary in size, shape and are hand attached to the frame that gives the lamp its shape.
