Early 20th century zoomorphic African ceremonial mask or puppet head sculpture attributed to the tribes people of Burkina Faso. This meticulously crafted wooden African mask or head sculpture features horns. Painted in a beige.
Resembles other African tribal masks made by the Bozo tribe in Mali.

This tribal African ceremonial mask or puppet head would have been used by the Bozo ethnic group during the Sogobo ceremony. This ancestral tradition continues in the region of Segou in Mali along the Niger river. It is an opportunity to regroup the different villages and give rise to musical and theatrical performances whose highlight is the puppet show.

Intended to honor the spirits of nature so that they protect the people and ensure the abundance of the rains, of fishing and harvesting.

Sogo bó, from sogo: Animal, meaning “the animal comes forth”.

Mask and puppet theatre plays a key role in the culture of two peoples closely linked in central Mali: The Bozos – the fishermen, and the Bamana – the farmers. These plays are a blend of numerous forms of theatrical expression:
Dancing, singing, music, puppets and masquerades (masked dances). In addition to performances governed by the farming season for the Bamana ethnic people, and the fishing season for the Bozos, puppet shows are put on to mark important community events: Marriages, circumcision ceremonies which take place every ten years and funeral rituals, etc. All the villagers, regardless of age or gender, can attend the shows, which take place on the village square and sometimes on
the river in the case of the Bozo community.

Carved grotesque wood mask with pierced eyes, very hooked nose, cigar between very crooked bone teeth. Label on verso reads, “Willi Huggler (Swiss, 1925-2016), Holzschnitzereien, Brienz, Schweiz”
Condition: The overall condition is very good with tiny dents to left side of the mask and some gentle scrapes around eye openings which do not detract from the powerful display.

Early 20th Century Large Tribal Shield

Highly decorative and impressive shields from the buttress-like roots and/or trunks of mangrove trees. The soft mangrove wood is well suited to be processed with tools made of stone, bone and shell. Shields are used in battle as physical protection against arrows and spears but are also worn on ritual occasions and placed at doorways to ward off unwanted intruders.
The rectangular form in unfinished nubuck hued hardwood has been inscribed with white curvilinear and geometric patterns.

Bidjogo Tribal Initiation Ox Mask, c. 1900

After oxen were introduced to Guinea Bissau by Portuguese sailors in the 15th century, its strength, aggression, and nobility quickly became integrated into their initiation rituals. The organic curves and expressive features of this mask helped young men take on the mantel (fireplace) of full adulthood by immersing them in the character of the ox. The richness of the wood and extension of the horns leaves negative space and shadow to fill out the striking form of this sculptural object.

Yoruba Egungun Headdress Mask

Attributed to the Yoruba people of western Nigeria, this wooden headdress was worn during a masquerade known as egungun. A widespread Yoruba ritual, egungun performances honor a community’s ancestors during funerals and annual gatherings. Dressed to embody those ancestors, egungun masqueraders confront the questionable behaviors of community members and reinforce the moral standards of previous generations. Surmounted by a crest-like hairstyle, this helmet mask has abstracted features, with closed eyes and subtle scarification on each cheek. The original darkened finish has aged considerably over a century of use, lending the mask a rich patina and beautifully worn texture.

Fiber Polychrome Mask Yam Ancestor Papua New Guinea

A well preserved Yam Ancestor mask professionally presented on a museum quality acrylic display stand. The mask was a classic tribal art piece from Abelam people who live in Maprik area of the Mid Sepik River region in Papua New Guinea. Yam is the main agricultural produce and a major food resource for the communities. As a result, many rituals and ceremonies developed around the planting, cultivating and harvesting yams. The mask was woven in a specific style and heavily painted with ochre and other earth pigments to depict the yam ancestor who is believed to dwell in the plants. Such masks are integral to the “Yam” culture and widely used in the dancing ceremonies.
The mask is small but very well made. It retains a deep surface patina that shows rubbing and crackle caking of the pigments, indicating that it was used in the field before being collected. It was sewn onto the acrylic stand so that it appears floating in the air.

Pende-Style Antelope Mask

Masks from the Pende people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo are considered some of the most dramatic works of African art. The Pende have defined an extensive range of mask forms, many with distinct characters embodied during ritual ceremony. Colored by red and white pigments, this Pende mask is topped by a diamond-shaped superstructure representing a pair of horns. Intended to combine the traits of humans and antelopes, the mask would have been worn during masquerades to represent an animal spirit. We love the graceful sweep of the mask’s narrow eyes and long nose, ending in a diminutive mouth.
