Djerma Painted Water Vessel

The Djerma people of Niger are well-known for their gracefully shaped and delicately painted water containers. The surface paintings are applied after firing with all natural pigments. The graphic, geometric designs closely relate to patterns that are woven in their textiles. This elegant pot is beautifully defined by its long neck accentuated with stripes and well proportioned handles. The top rim is not smooth, designed with four ridges to help support other stacked vessels. The once vibrant bodice with geometric shapes pointing to its waist has mellowed with years of use over fires that have left marks of maturity.

This is a very rare and exceptional example, acquired from a Chicago collector of contemporary and African art who had it in their collection for decades.

Nigerian Nupe Gourd-Form Water Vessel, c. 1900

Inspired by the natural world, Nupe ceramicists fired this water vessel in the shape of a gourd. The vessel’s varied surface textures and colors come from its functional design. The dimpling and geometric markings were engraved to give the drinker a better grip, creating the hand worn texture and off-colored streaks.

The rounded bottom was designed to rest on a half-buried vessel support inside of a Nupe house, stacked between other similar vessel forms. The top rim of this vessel shows evidence of having been used in this way, with subtle wear around the inside of the top rim.
