The wood is brown with visible grain and a dark hue at the bottom. The lid has an amazing fragment of Chancay textile with a geometrical pattern framed by a silver rim hallmarked “925”. The Chancay culture flourished between 1200 and 1450 A.C. being its center at 80 km. from present-day Lima City, being absorbed later into the Incan Empire. These very ancient textiles survived to this day thanks to the very dry weather of the area, the Chancays were very skilled at weaving with cotton, llama, alpaca, and sheep wool. An original piece that bridges between far away past and the present.

Mauritania African tribal folk art; the country’s name derives from the ancient Berber kingdom of Mauretania, located in North Africa within the ancient Maghreb. Berbers occupied what is now Mauritania beginning in the third century AD. Arabs under the Umayyad Caliphate conquered the area in the late seventh century, bringing Islam, Arab culture, the Arabic language and Moorish – Islamic art. Starting in the late 19th century, France laid claim to the territories of present-day Mauritania, in the early 20th century Mauritania was fully colonized by France as part of French West Africa.
