Rare African Aduno Koro, ‘Ark of the World’ Ceremonial Vessel, Dogon Peoples

The Aduno Koro (ark of the world) is a trough-like vessel used to hold the raw and cooked meat of sheep and / or goats that are sacrificed at a family altar during the annual ritual known as “Goru”, celebrated during the winter solstice. These are found in the house of a lineage elder known as a “ginna” and is typically carved with a horse head & tail, said to represent a mythic ark sent by the creator Amma and guided by the primordial being Nommo. The animal form is explained by the fact that Nommo, upon his arrival on Earth, first transformed into a horse and pulled the ark along behind him. The eight human figures carved in relief along the sides of the ark represent the eight original ancestors of humankind that were carried in the ark along with the essentials they would need for life on Earth. Similar ritual vessels can take a more fully representational, horse-like form, with four legs; others have fitted lids. The body of this ark is pleasingly rounded, subtly naturalistic yet still stylized. Interesting as well is the realistic treatment of the tail. The eight relief carved ancestral figures are supplemented by carved geometric motifs interspaced between them, as well as along the rim of the vessel.

Massive Yanomami Gathering Basket

The largest Yanomami basket we’ve ever seen! The Yanomami are an indigenous people to the Amazonian regions of Brazil and Venezuela. This monumental basket is tightly handwoven of natural fibers with several inner rings for stability, and palm leaf straps. The straps are placed over the forehead and used to carry the basket on ones back. Please note the slightly “wonky” resting position of the basket in the first two photos. These photos show the angle at which the basket naturally rests on a flat surface.

Moroccan Berber Tamgroute Terracotta Green Glazed Bowl

Large heavy Moroccan Tamgroute Tribal green terracotta glazed bowl.
Very large avocado green glazed earthenware bowl from Morocco.
Antique Moroccan Berber Tamgroute green glazed decorative terra cotta large decorative bowl.
Wonderful green and brown shimmering that can be found only in south Morocco in the village of Tamgroute.
The dark green color and texture is a result of the particular alchemy created by the potters of Tamegroute and remains a family affair handed down through the generations.
Each pottery piece is completely unique and no two are ever the same.
Please note that the traditional method in which the plates are fired involves stacking which result in tiny ‘scars’ inside the plate and in the glaze making, each bowl is unique the beauty is found in the imperfection of each piece.
Tamegroute pottery are true showpieces showing that even imperfect can be perfect.
Tamegroute remains the only rural pottery in Morocco using oxidized copper which creates its famous green color.
Its potteries are also the only location where you will find their unique forms.
The process however remains much the same. Clay is dug up from the local Draa river banks, thrown by hand & fired in kilns built into steep slopes using a single firing.
