Antique Tudor Elizabethan Henry VIII Oak Sword Six Plank Coffer Chest Trunk 1540

Antique Tudor/Elizabethan oak six plank boarded coffer/sword chest, circa 1540.
The coffer from the period of King Henry VIII having a hinged lid enclosing a storage area lined with 19th century newspapers, the sides, rear and base all of joined plank construction. The lid having handcut steel hinges most likely replaced in the 17th century from the previous steel ‘snipe’ hinges, the chest retaining the original handcut steel lock plate to the front.
The coffer having traces of sponge and paint decoration, various ancient repairs. Condition is good, even after half a millennium the chest is still useable for storage, a rare survivor from the mid 1500s.

A 16th century boarded oak clamp-front meal chest or ark, Welsh Borders, circa 1550
Having a typical dome-lid constructed using three overlapping boards wedged and tenoned into the upright and extended shaped-ends.
Fantastic colour and surface, good condition having a couple of minor repairs and losses only to be expected on an item of this age.
An ark was typically used for the storage of grain, such as meal, corn and flour. Traditionally it is thought the lid was not fixed in place and once removed the dished underside allowed use as a trough for kneading dough.

19th Century Zanzibar Chest

This is a very good example of a 19th century Zanzibar storage chest. The chest was created in the mid-19th century. The teak case is adorned with cut and open work brass strapping in addition to nail head decoration. The chest shows a deep natural patina. Minor sections of the brass strapping have been lost. The chest is further detailed with a series of small drawers along the bottom of the chest. The larger dimensions of the chest allow it to be used as a decorative element or placed where a table or case piece could be used. This is a very substantial piece of furniture which would add heft to any space. It would integrate well into Spanish or Italian design themes–even Gothic or Renaissance Revival would be comfortable with the chest.

Antique Zanzibar Chest in Teak Wood with Brass Overlay and Studs

Rare early 20th century handcrafted Zanzibar blanket chest with brass metal overlay and brass studs throughout. The antique trunk is comprised of solid carved teak wood and features ornate brass interior hinges. The interior is also fitted with a candle box on the upper left corner. The chest is adorned with ornate brass metal corner plates and brass studs throughout, creating a series of geometric symbols and Moorish inspired patterns. The patterns on the top of the trunk are said to symbolize the Fountain of Youth. The chest features a hand-carved ebonized wood base and brass carrying handles. Exquisitely detailed with magnificent craftsmanship. Originally used for travels and often for the exports of good. Makes a great coffee table or accent piece or entryway chest.
