Late 19th or early 20th century lacquer and bamboo offering vessel, Hsun Ok, Pagan, Burma

A large offering vessel composed of four pieces, a base, a large food bowl with lid and the finial. Two rows of high-stepping mythological beasts embellish the body of the main food bowl. 37.5 inches high by 17.5 inches diameter (95 by 44.5 cm).

This type of lacquer ware is known as yun, where the designs are incised, then lacquer is applied and wiped away, leaving the engraved lines with the black color.

A few minor chips, otherwise in very good condition.

Antique Burmese kalat lacquered offering tray, Shan States, Inle Lake, circa 1920. Assembled from wood and rattan covered in red, orange and black lacquer. A simple circular form with 11 turned spindle uprights and broad rimed woven tray with dynamic hooked spiral pattern in two rings rendered in black on a red ground. The underside with some unique markings in red on the orange ground. Minor cracks to the lacquer surface and normal signs of wear otherwise fine condition.

The black lacquered exterior and red interior Ok-Kwet, consists of ribbed base. Traditionally the stupa shaped vessel was used to present food as an offering to the monk and to monasteries. The four layers held varied edibles and the top cover may have been used to hold water.
