Dealer’s Note: The Sawankhalok kilns produced a great quantity of functional ceramics for export and domestic use. The celadon glazed wares were a popular export in the 15th century. The wood fired dragon kilns had a fair number of firing accidents that occurred in the firing of the precariously pontil perched pots in the volatile climbing kiln. After firing, ceramics that were not fit for purpose were discarded at the kiln site. These discarded ceramics are referred to as “Wasters”. Centuries later through excavation ceramics have been salvaged and repurposed. This particular bowl with a thick body that deserved to crack in the firing has been repurposed as an intriguing decorative ornament with a pleasant celadon glaze. At some point someone deemed it appropriate to restore the two apparent breaks on the lip in the glaze color matching manner.
