Vintage Design
This matching pair was bought together from Louis Poulsen in the early 1980s. Until recently they were installed at the City Hall of Nørre Nebel in the South-western part of Denmark. The condition of them is clean, intact and original. They still retain their original porcelain fittings, the old paper stickers from Louis Poulsen and the removable bottom diffusers that usually are missing on earlier examples (photo 4).
This design the Poul Henningsen PH 5-4.5 has the serial number 117069 and is called Charlottenborg. Its architecturally versatile four-shade system was designed by Poul Henningsen in 1931 (1929). In 1979 the two Danish architects Ebbe Christensen and Sophus Frandsen reinterpreted the design for the Music Hall of Aarhus in Denmark. They added a small blue shade to the designs interior to reduce glare and achieve a more even, comfortable light, ideal for an enhanced dramatic effect. We also have a pair available of the Larger PH 6.5-6. Same age and same provenance.
