This hand embroidered shoulder bag is from the Akha tribe and has been framed for display on a wall. The Akha are an indigenous hill tribe who live in small villages at higher elevations in the mountains of Thailand, Burma, Laos, and Yunnan Province in China. They made their way from China into Southeast Asia during the early 20th century. In recent years, many young Akha have migrated down into the valleys and become absorbed into Thai society.
The bag is made from mountain-grown hemp woven and dyed with indigo. Then the cloth is meticulously embroidered with colorful thread and cloth fragments of salvaged from other articles. Silk was highly prized and obtained through trade. All other elements are of Akha manufacture. Akha designs are known for their dark indigo backgrounds and highly geometric decoration. this bag is vintage -not made for export and made using only traditional materials, colorings and techniques.
